The Président brand was founded in 1933 by André Besnier in Laval, France, in the Loire Valley, where he began making cheese from local cow’s milk. Initially producing Camembert, the business grew steadily, and by the 1950s, André’s son Michel Besnier took over, expanding operations and becoming known for high-quality cheeses like Le Voyageur Camembert.
In 1968, Michel launched the Président brand, inspired by the idea that “France is the land of presidents” — a nod to the country’s tradition of leadership roles. The first product under the brand was Président Camembert, made from pasteurized milk, which revolutionized the Camembert market by offering consistent, high-quality cheese at an accessible price. That same year, the brand’s distinctive gold-and-black logo was created for markets in Normandy and Brittany.
